The 400ex is a recreational sport ATV the 450s (Any brand) have 450 motocross motors, 40mm TPS carb and upgraded suspension and are on the serious competition side of ATV track racing.
Their $1300 M.S.R.P price separation gap will reflects that .

The 400ex (Now called a 400X) can do much more hours before needing a rebuild though.

Both are nice but its like comparing a Mustang to a Ferrari .

What experience do you have and what type of riding do you plan on doing? Both are great machines, but aimed at different parts of the sport rider segment.

I was going to say…they are really in classes of their own. Really depends on what you want to do with your quad.

Go with the 400, for your specified needs it will be the most convenient. And they are plenty quick too, a stock 400 tops out around the 65mph range. They are also the most durable trail machine ever made on top of that. I had a 2002 400EX and upgraded to a 2013 to get reverse, wouldn't change a thing. If you want mad power and speed, find an old 2 stroke like a TRX250R or Banshee, those both will whip up on 450s like no other.
