what's your guys secrets for starting a cold 400ex?

full choke, hit starter, 1 throtle burst... when started ,1/4 throtle to keep running, thenis fine from there!thats what i do..

I end up jump starting mine continually. this always works on the cold days when it has sat for a while. Try and let it sit after about the 3rd crank and see if the block don't warm up a bit. Thier cold buggers to start for sure.

Actually, the cold is affecting the jetting; further, honda jets their machine lean, even says so in the manual.
How fast the machine turns over is irrelevant (to a degree). The reason people have success starting the machine with the gas applied is because the idle circuit is being starved of fuel, and giving it gas raises the ratio of fuel.
The correct solution is adjusting the air/fuel mixture using the screw. This certainly isn't a major jetting adjustment, and can be done simply with a screwdriver.
Plus, since the machine is already jetted lean, you will not have to re-adust it when it gets warmer.
On a final note, its free! Don't treat the symtoms, prevent them in the first place.
