I have had my 300ex for about two years now and figure its about time to adjust the valves. I was just wondering if it requires any special tools. I was going to go out and get a few shims to check the clearances and was wondering if there is any other tools I should get. thanks

all you need is a feeler gauge, and a couple of small sockets

Does anyone have the time to post the procedure and what the clearances should be? Oh yeah and approx. service intervals.

I have not been able to get ahold of a manual for the 2000 EX.

I think 96 was the newest I saw, and it could be very close but I gotta get the right one.
How much has really changed on these bikes ion the last four years?

Thanks for any input.

Here is a good article on how to adjust valves on a 400EX. How you take the plastic and gas tank off your 300 is alittle different. But the flywheel alignment and valve adjustment procedure is the same.
Adjust the valves on your 300EX to .100 milimeters clearance.
Tools needed are a 10mm open and box end wrench, small Creasent wrench, and a feeler gauge. You can purchase a feeler gauge from Sear's for about 5 bucks. Other various tools maybe needed to remove the plastic and gas tank.
If you still have questions, feel free to e-mail me and I can scan in the page from the service manual and send it to you. (chrisjstark@yahoo.com)
Good Luck.

Look for a feeler gauge that has ends set at a 45 degree angle. It makes it much easier to get the feeler between the valve end and rocker arm while working in such tight space. I found mine in the Hardware Department at Sears.

And remember, loose is better than too tight. While might loose one or two horsepower, you will keep from burning the valve seats.
