My boyfriend has a 440 kit in his 1999 400ex and he loves it. This past weekend, we were at Haspin Acres in Indiana and he raced two Raptors and beat them both. I'm not saying the Raptor sucks, who knows, it could have been the riders.
Anyways, he uses his for trailriding, racing and hill climbing. He really likes it. I believe he ordered the piston from Wiseco and took it to a shop and had them do the work on just the piston. He did everything else himself, except for the jetting. He had a hard time getting it perfect, so he just had someone else do it. He has the Big Gun complete system with the race core in it and he has probably spent about $850--give or take $50.00 for everything.
Hope this helps! Good Luck with your decision.

My cousin has a 440 big bore kit from Four Stroke Tech(Micke Dunlap). He sent his engine there. Had the local dealer remove the engine and install it. I believe the kit cost him around $1,300. Included all the internal work. I just got my DS. We haven't has a chance to run yet, but I rode his all day one saturday and I don't think my stock DS would beat it. I was really impressed with the power. It's putting out a claimed 52 hp. Probably at the head. I think the DS puts out around 54 at the head. So if that's correct, the 85+ pounds the 440 lacks compared to the DS should make it faster. later
