I would never run with my lid off, but then I live in the desert and we have major dust out here. I drill as many 1" holes as I can get in my lid and use those airbox filter vents (from White Bros, or Uni). I have been thinking about a DG airbox lid which is aluminum and has slots in it, but I would always run an Outerwears (water repellent) airbox cover on it if I decide to do this.

I got a vented lid from Powroll. That way I have a vented lid and a standard lid for varying conditions.

I only ride in the desert and Glamis, I do not use a lid or the stock snorkel. I have the snorkel hole blocked off. The way I see it is, in high dust conditions you need to properly oil your filter and use an outerwear. I have four outerwears and will change them sometimes twice a day. My uni-filter still looks brand new and is over a year old.

Go to sparksracing.com. They sell a cover that is like a filter skin. You cut out a piece of your airbox lid, and use the cover to keep out the big particles. It uses velcro to allow you to completely remove it if you want to.
