Hey jon1,
What color did you get? I saw many peaople post that the yellow ones were faster, and I saw one post state that the yellow was faster but the red handled better. I can't believe either one. I think the only difference is the color of the plastic. Why would Honda make two different 400ex's?
Anyway, it's a great bike (I love mine) and I hope you enjoy it! Have fun, and make sure to "sling some mud"! One more thing, if you are getting new tires, I got Mud Sharks on mine and they are GREAT! They hook up really well in mud, snow and dry pack, and they still slide well. I would buy the mud shark everytime for every bike I own.

jon1: I bought my 400EX recently too. Well, it was 3 months ago. It is still stock, but I have ordered A new K&N air filter and a DynoJet jet kit last week. I am still waiting for this to come. Next thing will be a White Brother E-series pipe and that will be it for now. Also consider re-gearing to 16 or 14 if necessary. I know that the combination of all these things will make your 400ex rock the place.
Have fun riding!

you are right! the yellow one has a hotter cam and a bit more compression (9.5:1 vs. 9.2:1) the red one is 2 inches wider overall. (+1 a-arms and a +2 axle) they are trying to make them appeal to a broader crowd. the original 400 had the engine of the red and the dimentions of the yellow. it is important to rembember that all parts are interchangible, so you can have a fast, good handling 400. i saw a prototype that had yellow front and red rear plastic, mabey honda is going to make it as the updated 400ex. only time will tell. honda has more machines up its sleeve, i heard 20 for 2001. right now they have 14, it will only get better!

as far as I know, the only difference between the red and the yellow one is the plastic. you know.. one is supposed to be red, and the other is supposed to be yellow. kewl heh!
