250R axle help

I am trying to put a new axle on my 1986 machine. But I am haveing some difficulty. Which way do you turn the axle nut? Both sides at the same time? What is the best to use for a tool? Pipe wrench? Also I undid the swingarm nuts that hold the bearing carrier in and I can't move the bearing carrier? Any help?
