The other day while going up a long steep mountain trail, My recon started losing power and finally died. After letting it cool off for about 10 minutes, it seemed fine and I had no other problems. I think it overheated, not sure. My question is how can you tell when it is "overheating"? Does anyone have the optional oil temp light installed? Does it ever come on? How much do one of those cost (with installation). I am just worried that I may eventually damage my engine because I can't tell how hot is too hot. Thanks

I've had a 2001 Recon since April but so far no problems like yours. I just went out and looked at it and never noticed it doesn't have the temp. light! It's my wife's and I don't ride it much. This sounds stupid and I don't mean to be funny but check your oil level. If it's ok then you may want to change it more frequently especially if you ride it hard in hot weather.

Well, the oil level is always good, and I change my oil about every 30 hours of operation (which takes about 3 months for me), but the one time when lost power and died, it was very hot (I noticed when I stopped), I was at about 9500ft and had came from about 7000. It was a long steep and rocky trail and it was about 90 degrees out. I guess I should just stop a little more often and give it a chance to cool down. Also I think that the 2002 Recon's are going to have auxillary oil coolers. Does anyone know if that would be something that you could add on to a 2001 or older one?

i noticed you have a winch. does it mount under the bumper up near the frame? if youre driving slow you might not be getting enough airflow. if thats the case some sort of cooling fan could solve your problems.

That's a good point, the Winch does block the normal path for airflow (its mounted behind the "grille&quot and probably causes a significant reduction in airflow. I would say the combination of reduced airflow and tough high altitude mountain trails can cause it to overheat. Does anyone know where you can get a auxillary fan?

i dont think they make cooling fans for aplications like that so it would be best to go to a auto parts store and look for a 12v fan that will fit. you may also have to make a mounting backet.

Check the spark plug color at the end of it

Black: Too rich-lean out the carburator
Brown: Just perfect
White: OVERHEATING-turn mixture screw counter-clockwise a bit ½ turn), ride, check it again

Default Recon Overheating Question

I've never had problems with my 2001 Recon. I could see if your climbing at a slow speed for an extened period of time in 90 degree weather where it could over heat. It seems like the oil cooler should be compatible. I haven't been in 90 degree weather since I put my winch on. But I was concerned about the air flow when I was installing it. I've read a post where someones Recon would stall after sitting. But that's understandable because of no air flow.
