400EX, do they overheat?

Man, you guys are a bunch of philosiphers!! LOL. interesting reading tho more on the subject, mine is running lean right now (factory) and has not overheated after all my abuse.

That's exactly the reasons I made the switch from the mojave.
It was a cramped, little machine (rode like it too). Also, just putting a pipe on the thing made me want to pull my hair out. Physically installing the pipe wasn't the big deal, but jetting that thing was a nightmare. Carburetor access was next to impossible. And don't even get me started about that worthless airbox/air filter setup. I made yamaha's banshee/warrior design look like a breeze.
The only thing I liked about the mojave was its relatively high tech motor (nice design for back in '87 when they came out). Power output should've been higher though. And how they stuffed that motor into that little frame....
The 400ex is great to work on. There's lots of space in the engine compartment to put hands/tools where they need to be. But just don't try to get the sparkplug out of the head while the engine is still hot (I still have a few burn marks...).

A symptom of an air cooled engine overheating is VAPOR LOCK, it will just start running poorly and produce very little power, unlike a water cooled 2 stroke where if you run low on coolent and overheat while your winding out 4-6th gears you will probably melt a piston, fortunatly that doesn't happen often and is caused by rider error, in not chacking his coolent before ridding.
