You can't compare the sound of a 300ex and a 400ex with the same model pipe. They will sound different. The hot pipes for the 400ex are the White Brothers E-series, FMF Powercore IV, Big Gun, and soon to be DMC Dual system. I just got the DMC Dual system for my 400 and it performs better than my friends Big Gun, though the Big Gun is a real nice system as well. I guess it depends on how much money u want to spend, and whether u want a complete exhaust or a slip on. I've heard complaints about the FMF Powercore but none about the others. Good luck choosing.

Look at the Supertrapp IDS. On a tunable exhaust system "loud" depends on what part of the band it is tuned for. "Quiet" is tuned for the low end torquey performance. If you want to go fast then you get loud. Just like gearing up or down, everything's a trade-off

GT Thunder did a 400EX exhaust shootout of a bunch of pipes including the Big Gun, Megamax, SuperTrapp, E-Series and others. They said that the E-Series was easily the best pipe. According to them it put out the most power, wasn't overly loud, had great fit and finish, and was still equipped with a spark arrestor. (Unlike the Big Gun.) If I were you I would go with the E-Series unless you need something really quiet. Here is where you can find the GT Thunder Shootout:
