Totally depends on many factors, including:

- riders ability
- riding conditions
- condition of the quads
- how modded the 400EX is

My 416 (see mods below) hangs within 1 quad length of a Raptor (with a pipe & jet kit) in a drag race on pavement up till 5th gear, when the Raptors top speed allowed him to pull away from me. *IF* it had been a stock Raptor, my 416 probably would have been nose to nose with him, up until 5th.

So it takes quite a fair amount of motor mods to a 400EX to keep it in the same ballpark as a Raptor -- in pavement drags. However, on the track and trail, I had no problem keeping up with, and I'm sure I could have easily gotten around the Raptor.

A bigger bore 400EX may do even better against a Raptor...with the right cam, exhaust, etc.

But in general, the Raptor hauls. To bad it isn't as reliable as it is fast.

In one word... money. In more, a big bore kit (get a 416 or 426), high comp piston (I would only go to 10.5:1 so you can say on pump gas), a cam (drop in so you dont have to hard surface your rockers), and a good full exaust. That should get ya ahead nicely.

A 440 12:1, 450/451 cam, port, DMC, 14/38 will take most Raptors in 300' sand. Top end the Raptor pulls away. $1100-1200 will do mods mentioned.

For all you 400ex riders, there is hope. My buddy's 426ex(EXJumper on this forum) with a 10:1 compression piston, White Brothers Pro Meg exhaust, port and polish(done by himself), plus K and N filter, will hang within a quad length of me from 1st to 5th gear on pavement. That is with a stock Raptor. There is a slight weight difference between us, about 15 lbs, with him being the lighter one. We are waiting for him to purchase a cam to see how much closer it is.

The 400 stock kicks the raptor's but!!!
Im not talking speed!
You want just speed jump from a plane and you will get speed!
the honda will outperform the raptor from a technical stand point handsdown!
Come on raptor lovers start slaming!
But the truth is still the truth!

We just need to face it, Yamaha, Cdale, Bomb. all have us beat. What little mods they do, we have to counter with MAJOR mods!

All you have to do is either race him a few times so the clutch popping blows his tranny or just just nerf his back tire and snap his axle.
