400ex upgrades (which ones first???)
#1
For all of us working class folk, we will be receiving a check from Uncle Sam for $300. I was going to sink it into my quad, but what should I do first? I was thinking about getting Razr's on Douglas wheels (front and back). I was also considering a pipe (Pro Circuit T4, FMF Powercore 4*2, or Supertrapp). Any suggestions ? I'll probably do one now and the other around December....

I would go with the pipe first. The tires could be a good choice but you will not get nearly as much performance as with a pipe. The Pro Circuit and the Suppertrap are a good choice but I would also look into the White Bros E series. It is one of the few non racing spark arrested pipes the give you performance gains through the whole powerband.
Also I am not one of the lucky ones that get a check. I have not worked long enough yet.

I just received my ProCircuit T-4 pipe the other day. I plan on installing it this weekend and adjusting the jetting. I did not like the lack of throttle response that the machine had with the stock pipe. Rocky Mountain ATV has the T-4 pipes for $189 plus shipping. That should leave you some extra money for some other goodies

How is it going? I dissagree on the pipe the most you are going to gain is 1 to 2 horse at the most and the 2 horse is being generous. What you can do is change the power band, some pipes give a harder hit out of the hole some in the mid range and some on the top. You can get some of these same reactions from a much less expensive sprocket change (mine has a 14 front $20 to $25)A K&N filter, I don't remember the exact cost I would guess around $50. Tires are a great upgrade, stock get the job done but after market make a big differnce you won't notice as much untill you have to put the stockers back on. Another thing that you don't hear a lot about is steel braided brake lines. I could not believe the differnce between my EX with them and my brothers EX without. I bought the EX from a guy who got them and did'nt get them on so he threw them in on the deal if it had'nt been for that I probably would never of known the differnce.I think they go for about $129. The pipe is a good idea but you can get a lot more out of your money and I think a lot more performance out of your machine with these mods. Hell suck it up get out the credit card and do it all! Don't forget about skid plates (depending on terain very important)hand guards, larger fuel tank, nerf bars, twist throtle, it goes on and on. Oh yeh don't forget protective riding gear another very important thing if you plan on riding hard and fast! That $300 just keeps shrinking.

Thanks for the info guys !!
I'll probably just end up buying the pipe and the wheels/tires, but not right away.
Hey Magnum....How's that T-4 pipe ? That is the one I will probably go with. I can't see paying
almost an extra $100 for the White Brothers. I heard a T-4 pipe on another 400ex last weekend
and it sounded sweet !
Hey Fitz...What do you lose with the 14 tooth sprocket....Top speed ?
How do the steel-braided brake lines increase performance ?
I already have all the riding gear I need, but that would be a good investment
if I didn't have it.

I just installed the T-4 on Saturday. Installation is fairly easy. I had a little trouble getting the bottom bolt align, but nothing a little cussing didn't fix . I then installed a 155 main jet ($3.50 from the dealer). I have only rode the machine in my yard and up and down the street so far, so I haven't been able to tell the true performance yet. My initial impressions are that the mid and top end are greatly improved. The bottom improved some, but not as much as I had hoped. They do make smaller endcaps that are supposed to help the bottom out a little. The pipe is loud, but has a good sound to it. I also purchased the quiet core insert. I am not sure it actually lowered the sound much when installed. It kinda changed the sould though. Hard to describe, but definetly different. I would not spend the money on it if I had to do it again. I am still playing around on the jetting. I think the 155 main is a good start as the machine really screams at wide open throttle. I have done a few plug checks after wide open runs and the plug looks pretty good. I need to do some more testing to see if the pilot and needle jet will need adjusting. I tried turning the pilot screw out 1/4 turn (richer) and it would bog on take off from idle. I turned it back (leaner) and it cured the bog. So I think I am ok on the pilot jet for now. As I said, I still need to do more testing on it. I ordered my T-4 from Rocky Mountain. It was like $190 plus tax.

dotn forget with that pipe youll need a high flow air filter like a kandN and rejet.
