250X 300ex 400ex airfilter ??

I have an 87' 250X. And I just got a pipe for it , I was wondering if I could take the matal peace out of the stock airfilter without any negative effects. I heard that alls it's there for is a fire preventor incase your carb backfires , is this true ? Thanks in advance , Zeebo
