Does a 250ex have a oil filter? I heard u just change the oil how can this be possible? also after the 20hr breakin time is it worth it to have the dealer do the "look over the bike thing" it costs about 140$$. They told me they reset the valves. Is this hard to do?

No they don't have an oil filter and no in my mind I dont think that paying them $140 to get it "looked over" and valves adjusted is worth it. If you buy yourself a $40 manual you can do it yourself + the manual tells how to do EVRYTHING to your 250EX. You will need some fealer gauges though not that much only $20 or less. You will have to buy the manual anyway if you plan on working on and maintaining your 250EX properly , so you should just buy one now and do the valve job yourself. Good luck

I have 329.5 hrs on my Recon (Almost same motor as 250EX) and its never been back to the dealer. Never have had valves adjusted and runs just as good as the day I purchased it. No oil filter, just internal screen. I change my oil between 20-25 hrs most of the time. If I were you I would ride it for a day and change the oil to get out small metal particles. Put a pan under it and let drain all night. This is the messy part because when its almost completely drained it starts to drip on the frame. Mine is a mess under there but it sure won't rust. I keep the air filter clean and have changed the spark plug once and I am due again. If something were to happen to my Recon I would go buy another one. $140.00 I am sure at that price there profit/loss statement looks real good. That seems very high for valve adjustment. I paid $40.00 to have my Raptor's valve adjusted and only because of all the problems with the lean/carb problems or I wouldn't have had it done. I have never had my valves adjusted on Trx300 either(over 300 hrs) and it seems to run just fine to. Hey all my engines might blow up on Sunday because of no valve adjustment but right now there good to go ready to launch. Chet

Yeah the so called "20hr maintence" thing the dealer trys to sell u sounds good because they tell u its a 4hour look over but that to me is a steaming pile of cow-dung-hole in your pocket! When I bought the bike they were supposed to get it ready to take home, meaning check/add oil if it NEEDS some! along with other things but did they NO, I checked it and it wasint even reading a drop of oil on the stick. Had to add a quart of oil but did they care NO.... anyways how are u supposed to clean yr air/filter. wash it w/water then put oil on it?

Gutairjunke,
I have used PJ1 Foam filter cleaner spray and PJ1 Foam filter treatment spray(super tacky) for almost 4 years now.(used to do the diesel fuel/engine oil soak method) For the best results I follow directions on the can. I two have two sets of filters for my Raptor and Kdx200 because lots of times they need cleaning from the dust and then I can throw a new set of filters on so the machine will be ready to go for the next day. Many a night after cleaning the filter for my Recon I have set at the table with a hair dryer(high heat) so I can get that filter back on. Depending on the machine if it has a sealing ring be sure and put extra filter treatment or some hard grease to prevent dirt entering the area around the ring where it seats. Chet
