I am curious is there a difference in the heads of like a 86 R to a 89 R? I need a new one and thought I heard that the 86 is deeper than the 88 or 89. Thanks for all the help!

I dont think there is a difference in the heads, just the cylinders and pistons. Could be wrong, but I think the heads are the same. I have a head and clyinder for sale if you are interested e-mail me.

The '85 and '86 heads are preferred for modding. Some say that the material they were cast from is better. I've heard mention of a deeper pocket, but never having sectioned one to verify that myself, I cant say for sure. Externally and bolt up wise, identical all R years.

The only difference is in the dome design. If I can remember correctly, the 85/86 heads have a smaller diameter pocket that is deep while the 87-89 heads are more gradual.
