I'm fixing to buy my first ATV and I have narrowed it down to these two models.

First off all I will have to finance the atv so money is a factor in this decision.

Here goes:
I can purchase a new '02 Honda Sportrax 250EX for the same amount monthy as a used '98 300EX
So I've got new vs. used here for the same amount monthy. I'm always a little weary of buying used since you aren't sure how the product has been treated.

I have ridden my friends 250EX and I really like that quad...it's quick and agile
I've never ridden a 300EX though.

I'm currently leaning towards the 250EX for the following reasons:
Same monthy payment as a used 300
I absolutely LOVE the new yellow and black
I like the idea that it has a shaft engine with low maintenance
It's new

I've had people tell me that I can't go wrong with the 250. I will mainly be riding trails...no sand here I liked the 250 that I rode and had a really good time with it...the only thing that bothered me a little was it felt as thought it was pushing in the turns and as though it was going to flip...I was told that I would get used to that.

Well...that's about it guys....what do ya' say?
Thanks!

I hate to burst your bubble but I am going to do it >(pop). If you can't afford to pay cash for this machine I wouldn't do it. Quads are a luxury item and a very fast depreciating asset. Don't go for the instant gratification, save up the cash and go purchase a new Quad. You will appreciate your future purchase that much more. I know you probably won't listen to me so I will tell you want I think I would do. I would still wait and save up enough cash for down payment to purchase a new 300EX or go all out and get a 400EX. Unless you are a absolute beginner you will quickly out grow the 250EX. Also,if you just have to have the 250EX, Think about the Recon its almost the very same machine. The 2002 model has 250EX motor, its just a little heaver,it has racks that can be used to carry lots of items and finally the Recon is about $300.00 cheaper as where with the 250EX its all sport and no utility. I love my 99 Recon and would be able to keep up with any 250EX or a 300EX in the woods. Chet

Thanks for your opinion...but I want an ATV now...and Honda is offering an exceptional interest rate...that is why I am looking at the 250EX. I am a beginner...I've only rode twice. And I want a sport quad...I could care less about utility. I just want to have fun with it. One other thing I like about the 250 is that it have the automatic clutch.

c2kvette,
Next Time you are at the Honda shop look at the 250EX and then go look at the Recon. There the same machine except for different plastic and the racks. Like I said before they even put the 250EX motor in the 2002 Recon. The 250EX is a Recon only prettier. I haven't been to Honda website but I think its $300.00 cheaper and that makes the payment lower to. Just remember pretty don't always win.I just wish my Raptor would close its mouth sometimes. When it comes time for a trade in or a sell in the paper you will get more people looking at the Recon because of the wider appeal than a single point(sport) 250ex. Past owner of a 1980 arrest me red Corvette and will have another corvette in the future. Chet

i suggest you do what raptoryfm660r says. The recon is a 229cc not 250 the same as the 250ex, its a 229cc quad. id go with the recon. i would have more fun on a utility rather a sport quad.

Reckon....is out of the question. I don't like it. And I've read reviews on the 250EX and there is a bigger difference between the two other than the engine...it's basically not the same. I'ts the new 250EX or the three year old 300EX that's the two I want to choose between.

P.S. I've got a 2000 Torch Red Corvette Coup...hope you get that Corvette in the future...if you haven't drove a new C5 yet...I know you will be amazed by the difference between a C4 and a new C5.

Thanks!

Well if that is your choices then as the former owner of a 1999 300EX I would go for the used 98 300EX. The 300 EX will do everything better than a 250ex. You will have more control over the machine since it has a clutch. My 300Ex was one heck of a woods machine. There was nothing wrong with my 300 EX it was just time for me to move up to my Raptor. I haven't driven a C5 yet. Is yours the 6 speed or auto? When I get mine I am considering going down to Bowling Green to see it being made and then to pick it up there. I am about 2 hours away from the Corvette plant. Pretty neat place. Leaning towards a silver or white one. Chet

My Vette has the 6-speed...I personally wouldn't have it any other way...it has the light oak interior with the sport bucket seats, chrome mags, a Corsa Indy exhaust system and I absolutely LOVE it!!! I've always wanted to plan a trip to Bowling Green...hopefully I will be doing that sometime this year or next year. You might be intersted in www.corvetteforum.com or the c5forum.com if you haven't already visited these corvette forums..lots of info on America's Sports Car

Quote "the only thing that bothered me a little was it felt as thought it was pushing in the turns and as though it was going to flip...I was told that I would get used to that." my Recon does this same thing. I haven't yet got used to that and I have over 330 hours on it. The machine will never overcome this problem because of its stance. Its just not wide enough. On the 300ex you would have to be really hanging it out to get that feeling. The 300ex is much wider machine and less prone to the tipping. Thanks for info on Corvettes, Chet

im sorry raptoryfm660r but the quad hes is really looking for is the 250ex. u read it everywhere... it's a good begginer/intermediate machine. he has only ridden TWICE! for what he wants to do the 250ex is way better! He already said that he likes the auto clutch and shaft drive better. And im not sure but i would bet that the 250ex is as good for what he wants to do as the 300ex is. All he is gonna do is ride in the woods. For doing that a shaft drive and auto clutch is better. As far as speed goes, the 250ex is about 3-6 mph slower on the top end than the 300ex. I have nothing against the 300ex but for what he is doing, the 250ex is the way to go.
