but that is one of the good things about getting a blaster I think over the 250ex because my kid will not be nagging me to get him a new quad because his is to slow and my friend has one for his kid and he upgades it as his kid gains in skill

This is a honda forum so most people are going to say get the 250EX but I have riden blaster's and had a recon (same basic thing as 250EX) and for someone who is 100 lbs and 5'4 and isn't a $H!TTY rider get the blaster !!!!!!!!!

I would have to say get the 250ex. Better brakes, no chain to mess with. Air filter, oil is easy to check. He would ask less questions with a 250EX. At his weight it would have a pretty good power to weight ratio. Chet

i would also get the 250ex
for 1 simple reason "the brakes suck really bad on the blaster"
and i dont think you would want your son on a quad with bad brakes would you?

We have both. The Blaster is certainly the hotter bike of the two. There are a ton of mods for it, and as he grows and becomes a better rider, you can increase the power of the bike to match his ability. This way he can kind of grow into the bike. Teenage boys get bored with mellow bikes real fast (that's why we have the YZ250!). It has manual clutch too, something evey kid should get used to so they can advance to the performance bikes some day.
BUT, I'm not sure how durable the Blaster really is. Ours is DOWN ALL THE TIME for some kind of repair (a lot of transmission problems), and the neighborhood kids Blasters are down a lot too, so this isn't just an isolated case. The worst thing was a BADLY cracked swingarm. Now this bike sees some big air, but our 300 gets the same treatment, and the 300 hasn't had a problem of any kind-so buyer beware! I've come to think of the Blaster as a disposable bike. You ride it a few years, then throw it away.
The 250 is less powerfull, but it isn't wimpy by any means. One of the advantages, is that it is based on the well respected Recon (a utility). It has high ground clearance and shaft drive, so it can handle some utility type situations that the Blaster isn't good at. In the long run the 250 will give years of carefree service, but it won't be as thrilling as the Blaster. Also, see the post "SPORTRAX 250 EX", for my experiences with the 250's tires.

They are both nice ATV's. The Blaster is more exciting to ride, but breaks a lot, unless you really baby it. You can mod more HP out of it fairly easily, and cheaply(relatively!).
The 250EX, is built better, but is a bit more tippy, and the motor does not "light up" so it is somewhat less exciting to ride. It really needs better suspension and a little more width. Not sure about modding more power out of it. I don't see many options for getting any "real" HP out of the motor.
It seems to me the "kids" are all wanting to do those freestyle jumping tricks lately. If you think your son is going to want to do that stuff, the Blaster is better.
If he is going to be doing a lot of woods riding, the 250EX, with reverse, electric start, and auto-tranny, might be just a little bit better.
