I knew when I got my 250EX that I would eventually want to change to better (ie softer) shocks all around. I also figured it would be awhile because of finances. The other day after coming home with a sore back, I was looking at the rear shock and realised the spring was easily removeable. The thought crossed my mine that just putting a softer spring on back would be a good cheap solution. Does anyone have a clue where I could start looking for a different spring? I e-mailed Works Performance and they said "Have no idea what spring would work for stock shock or where you could get one." Their lowest price shock for this model is $459! I was really surprised at their reply as well as lack of low cost replacement for this machine. This is a big seller. Seems like if someone could come up with a cheap fix for the stiff suspension it would be a big seller. Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance.

BK -

I know what you're saying, I bought a 250ex for my wife (weighs 105 lbs.). The rear shock wouldn't even compress while she was riding.

I weigh 190 lbs. and I thought they were stiff.

I just went ahead and purchased works shocks all the way around for her weight.

When you call works, ask to talk to the engineering department. They'll probably know who makes the factory springs. Also, you might be able to measure the spring then relay the demensions to works - they might be able to find a similar spring from a different manufacturer.

Just to let you know though, the shock is valved for that spring rate, and changing the spring will throw the valving off - and the stock shock has no rebound and compression settings. It probably won't affect it much though, and you'll get a better ride than not changing the spring at all.

How much are the works shocks? How do you like them? Was thinking of getting something to soften the ride.

I got them for right around $800 with overnight shipping included.

As of right now, the front shocks are great. They really help remove most of the bump-steer condition (handlebars don't turn when you hit a bump). The valving seems to be set up properly in the front.

I'm not too happy with the rear right now. They seem to have set it up too stiff, and the valving seems all wrong. It kinda feels like the stock rear. The rebound is too fast. Also, the rear feels too stiff, but when you hit something big, there's not a lot of compression dampening. I don't know, I think I'll send it back. I'm not sure if the lack of overall rear travel has anything to do with it. In addition, it's really hard to be sure, my wife doesn't really know what 'feels' right, and when I get on it, my weight is a factor. So I have to follow her and watch how the quad reacts.

I think when I get the bugs worked out, it'll be a fine setup.

With that said, I think that works shocks would be a great mod for you. Works performance seems to look out for their customers, and although the shocks aren't the best, they're much, much better than stock (once they're set up right!).
