Best woods\ocasional mx racing cam???
#1
Soon i am having Mark Baldwin put probly a 416 or 428 in my bike and he told me the other day when i went over to his shop to find what cam i wanted. So thats what i need your help for. I don't want anything really wild because i want my bike to be as reliable as possible. I mainly woods race but i still have to show my friends that i can still beat the sh"t out of them on a mx track. So what cam do i need? Also it can't be expencive because i'm only 14 and have little $.

How much are these cams? Also i just want anything cheep and works good with the higher compression piston. It would be for higher revs because i also make sure i keep my revs high so i don't end up doin a wheely into a tree. But then again i don't like my revs 2 high when i am jumping in mx. So what would be the best "in between" cam? Like mid to high rpms is what i have my bike at all the time.

ok some people are going to jump on this reply ,but Ive tryed three differnt cams now,the best cam for bottom end power is not,web cam ,not wb-track cam,not xr400 cam,it is the stock cam!!!
Of course it is, cams are all about compromise.
That said, when you start doing things like raising compression, head porting, etc, it becomes wasteful to run a stock cam, because you are likely developing more bottom end than you need and are not allowing other aspects of your engine to work together to produce the best, most usable power.
That said, an XR cam works well if you want a killer bottom for woods racing, but want a little more mid and top as well.
If you do the XR cam, high compression piston, carb, mild head work and an exhaust, you will have more bottom than you need, but still have a descent mid and top. You should adapt where you run the engine to where the engine wants to be run - not where you think it should run. But if you don't want all that bottom, then go with a more aggressive grind like a GT Thunder cam, HRC, or one of the wilder web cams (last I heard, WB cams ARE web cams). With the setup mentioned above, you'll likely find yourself running the engine far lower in the RPMs, because it works well down there and doesn't need to be "screaming" all the time.
You're really going to have to analyze what other mods you are doing to your engine and what your intended use is - your engine builder should be the best at helping you decide.
