400EX, best mod for the money. Big bore or hotter cam?
#1
Okay guys, I'm looking for my next mod. What is the best mod for the money. I'm looking to get the most horsepower for the least expense. Big bore or hotter cam? Please list your mods and results. As in how your mods compare (as in drag racing) with piped Banshee's and Raptors. Thank's in advance.

Without a doubt go with just the big bore kit. A good big bore will cost you around 300.00 probably. If you were to buy cams, you'd have to pay the CAM CORE charge and also if you wanna keep reliabilty in your engine, get your rocker arms hardened. If you were to buy from a good company, it'd probably cost you around 500.00 for cams/corecharge/rockers. I'm in the same situation, but i dont know where i'm going to buy my cams from. Also if you get cam you might have to change valve springs and retainers.
if you did however put a cam on, i dont think you would like it without a piston/port/valve job. It would cut your low end probably close to in half but giving you more mid/top power. I had the wb trek cam and it was mostly mid top and it was an OK cam.
With the big bore, you will gain power all around and not sacrifice any power anywhere in the rpm ranges. go with big bore, then if you get some extra money, cam/carb/port/valve job/pist and you will be set!

Big bore = cheap horsepower. If you want the most from your big bore then you have to get a cam and get your head ported. A high compression piston to go with the big bore helps even more. 10.5:1 is a good starting point. Right now I'm running 11:1. Hope this helps!
