87 250r what to look for

Going to go look at an 87 250r and would like to know what to look for. What are some of the things that typically go wrong with this year. Not real familiar with the different years. Didn't they change some things from 86 to 87 models.

I would suggest doing a search on this.It has been covered many many times.

Mainly check for a cracked or bent frame.Also make sure the transmision works good and finds neutral easily.Check all the bearings and make sure it is in good shape.


A couple things changed in 87.The main thing is the rod is longer on the 87-89 than the 86's.There was other little things also.I also think the 87-89's have a bridge in the exhaust port while the 86's didn't.THis was to keep rings from breaking.(not sure on that one I know that changed though)But the swingarms and frame geometry didn't change till 88.


It doesn't matter what year an R is it is still an awesome machine.They are being phased out by these new 4 strokes though!

ugly...I read your signature..."gettin ready to be a 310"
Couple questions Who's 310 cylinder/kit are ya gonna use ?..why?
Are ya goin w/a power valve motor??....thanx

I am going with an ESR 310 motor with trx-7 porting.I am also using there pipe silencer,and igntion.I will be using a 38 mm air stryker carb.I am not sure what kind of reed valve yet probably a boyesen rad valve with a CR250 intake boot and a hinson reed spacer.

I hope to be done by the middle of this summer.Because I am also replacing both center cases,Getting a wiseco crank,all new bearings and seals in the lower end and a complete hinson clutch with stock plates.I have been saving money and am going to wait till I get my tax returns.So I can buy most of it at one time.I am going to build the lower end first then get the cylinder.

I wish I could afford a power valve cylinder but I cannot.


The reason I am going with ESR is because I have heard nothing of good things about them.There exhaust are the best and I think they will really help atv racing.To bad they couldn't have gotten back sooner.The 4-strokes are taking over!

This bike should run when I am done!
