im considering so many quads in the spring, my favourites are the new z400 and the cdales. the 400ex is certainly a concern though.

handling?
top speed?
trails?
jumps?
suspention?
wheelies?

can this quad wheelie in 3rd gear without the clutch? 1st? 2nd? top speed? any thoughts or ideas, maintance tips?

The 400 will wheelie in 1st or 2nd without the clutch without much effort.

My 400 will not wheelie in 3rd without the clutch at the 5000+ feet in elevation where I live.
At my brothers house in the San Diego area in CA, It will with a strong tug on the bars. Its noticably stronger down near sea level where the air is dense. At this elevation, second gear will stand it up very quickly without the clutch.

Top speed with stock sprockets around 65-68 MPH.
Handling is only matched by the cannondales, nothing else really compairs.
Trails, its # 1.
Jumps, probably the same, again, only matched by the cannons.
Suspention is absolutely awesome.

Though not as strong as the Raptor, DS or the other 250+CC advantaged, or the fuel injected Cannons, It will hold its own. Even in a dragrace with my two buddies Raptors, they sure dont run very far away.

I also ride with a 2001' Warrior. Power and torque is no contest.
Though the Warrior is a nice machine, the 400 feels like it has literally twice the torque.

Hope I helped.

You will be VERY VERY pleased with a 400ex!!! I love mine to death, I wouldn't trade it for NOTHING!!!! Perfect for Trails, Hills, creeks, wheelies, mud (not deep), etc.

I just bought one last week. I rode it all day last Sunday. I was very pleased and impressed with it. It has plenty of power, and the handling is incredible. The ergonomics are perfect. Jumps great, as well.

I was torn between a couple of different choices. I dug out all of my old atv mags, and the choice was quite clear. It even won the shootout between the Raptor, DS650, and the Scrambler 500. I've rode all three, and found more things I disliked than those I liked.

Personally I would scrap the 400EX project and just pick up a 250R. I have an '86 250R, and have ridden a new 400EX, and the 250R takes the cake... Hands down!

I bet you enjoy that raw 2-stroke power your T-cat makes... Why give that up for a thumper 400...

This again, is MY PERSONAL opinion.

I say wait for the new Suzuki Z400 to come out this spring(or whenever). Supposedly it should handle like a 250R and hang w/ a Raptor.....I'd wait and see anyway, at least the EX's should get a lower price tag....Latah

i have a ktmsx125 and im STILL getting used to the power, had it a few months. people say that 400ex is under powered is that true? i was just out marking up the dirtroad with my warrior, practising wheelies because i think its a lot harder to wheelie a quad than my dirtbike... and i mean a LOT harder. lots more weight. on my ktm i can wheelie every gear, even keep the front wheel up until i get to overrev, god im proud of that but its mostly the bikes unbelievable power. my tcat has gotten me into trouble a couple times, as soon as you hit the UNREAL powerband itll wheelie until like 200kmh! i often scare myself, itll beat a v10 soupped up car. im thinking of getting a snow drag bar because everytime, EVERYTIME i just touch the thorottle my arms fall apart. i need a 440 or something.

im 14 5'7 and around 190, im trying to loose weight will the 400ex be too underpowered for my weight? here, from this day forward, i PROMISE to eat healthy! . what about the suspention? if the 400ex cant do me or i dont have the money ill just end up getting a banshee, thats definetly my second choice. but i do lots of woods riding, trail riding, jumping... JUMPING?! with my weight will the suspention hold? im like 190-200 and bulky, chunky, blah, im "big boned" lol... even if i tried to loose like a 100lbs i couldnt or id look belimic. im gonna post a post about loosing weight.
