In shopping and comparing the Rancher 4x4 versus 2x4 models I noticed that the 2x4 versions rode softer. After looking at the shocks on each, I found that they are different part numbers. Apparently Honda has installed softer shock/springs on the 2WD Ranchers and that along with the taller, wider tire gives it the softer ride than the 4WD versions. I realize that the 4WD can't be beat when it comes to mud and steep, rough terrain but if softer ride is a consideration, the 2WD is an option. Too bad ATV shocks are so high priced or we could all customize our rides.

The other day I was busting some (surprisingly!) big air on the 2X4. The landings were amazingly soft, primarily I think due to the big balooney rear tires, which contribute a lot to the suspension.

Way to Go! Having fun is what it's all about. I agree, the tires are a very big part of the suspension. Wish it wasn't zero degrees here so I could be riding this time of year too. The Rancher has an electrically heated carburetor so it runs in cold weather but the chill factor on my old body takes the fun out of it.
