I talked about my friends 250r in another post before but I have a new question. His piston shattered on him and he is wondering if he has to take the bottom end apart or if it is good enough to just flush it out. Can he just flush the peices out and just get a new piston or does he have to do a lot more. Tell me everything you think he'll need to do to properly fix it. Please give me any advice. He wants to get riding again as soon as possible.

I would highly recommend him taking the bottom end apart and cleaning it like that. He will need a complete gasket kit. And all his bearings and seals for the bottom end. Its a big job but it will save him a year down the road.

How much would everything cost to do it properly. Could you give me an approx. breakdown of the cost of each thing needed. Also if anyone has any other comments I'd love to hear them.

Well these are just estimates but here you go.
clymers manual-- $40.00
Complete gasket kit-- $40.00
Main Bearing and seal kit-- $50.00
I can't really think of anything else. But I havent bought this stuff for a while. But other than that just make sure you got the right head gasket and stuff. well i hope this helps. Sorry i couldnt be more help.

new piston kits usually run around $90 to $100. if your going to split your bottom end, it would be a good idea to have someone check out your crank to make sure that none of the broken piston pieces made it into the b.e. bearing. also, shattered pistons are usually the result of excessive piston to wall clearance, so it would be a good idea to bore out the cylinder to a oversize piston.

just my $.02
