I would like to get a bit more out of my 01 4X Rancher. NOW, without mickey mousing or altering what the factory had intended when they designed the motor. What I mean is keeping the same reliable starting and performing Rancher I am used too. Also I dont want to change the exhaust. I like it quiet because I use this quad for hunting. Let me know if F'n with the jetting and so on will effect its normal reliability. Also $ involved. I am not looking to go crazy with the $ because I am getting some 589's in the spring. I will greatly appreciate the replies.

Changing the jetting will not help you. Changing jets is ONLY needed when changing air flow with an air filter or exhaust system. You are asking for more power without altering what you have, this is not possible.

Anytime you mess with your quad your going to most likely loose some reliability in the process. Example, larger tires means more wear on drive line, and engine. Lift kits cause angles of CV-shafts to sometimes be put at to steep of angle causing premature wear. Etc. etc...

So if your looking for a little more power without MAJOR modifications then you need to get a K&N power kit. This includes a different air filter that allows more air into the engine, alonge with the Needle and Jet to then allow more fuel with this larger amount of air being pulled in. It cost 139.95 on HL. This is really the cheapest and easiest mod to do to get a little more power out of your quad. Then if you wanted to you could always add a PIPE later, this would really add some more power.....more noticeably than without a PIPE. But if your goal is to gain power without noise then JUST THE.....K&N air filter, jet, and needle kit is what you need. I have it on mine and it makes a good difference. I to don't want the noise OR i would have a pipe.....there is a clear difference when adding the K&N kit with the pipe.

Now as for reliability problems......The K&N kit will allow more dust into your engine than the OEM foam air filter will. Also everytime you wash and re-oil your K&N air filter the thing runs differently for some if you put TO MUCH oil in or not enough. So these normally are not serious problems, its just showing you that YOU need to be more aware of added maintance is required and tunning. When ever this is the case reliability suffers.....SOME. Look at it like this, the minute you open up a bag of Chips......they are never the same. Doesn't mean they don't taste as good the next day and can't be re-sealed......but it does mean your tinkering with things and therefore problems are more likely to happen. So its all up to you to decide which is worth more......a little more power or increased chances of reliability problems.

later,
Scott

Save your money and your time. Honda did there home work on the Rancher. What you got is what you get! I insatlled a pipe and kit on my 01 4X4 ES and had it on all summer. During hunting season you could here me comming across the whole county. I took it off an the power loss is almost nada! The rancher is what it is . Otherwise Honda would have named it a Racer!!! If you want to go fast get a 400EX.

You must not have had yours Tuned correctly then or something was wrong, because I've gained the use of second gear with just the air filter and jet kit compared to being stuck in 1st all the time with the addition of 25" Outlaws. I would easily contend that with the full system like you said you had should have made a NOTICABLE difference. Sorry to hear you didn't. If you don't mind me asking.......what kind of pipe, and what jet, to needle settings did you use? Thanks.

As far as pipes go, I was under the assumption that if you use a Cobra quiet series that it does add the HP without the noise. That is just what I have heard. I'm not sure. If anyone has had one of these pipes maybe they can enlighten me. I am looking to get one for my fourtrax 300.

Scott,
I have read your posts and looked at your pictures for some time now. I feel comfortable with your response. Now I am thinking of just getting the 589's in 24". If that is not possible I will look for the equivilent in tread. I just do not want to put 25's on and say S..T I have to ad some performance mods now. I am a firm beliver of what you said about changing factory parts that were designed that way for a purpose. I use to have Jeep Wrangler and put a lift, bigger tires, cam , and all other kinds of goodies. Even though I did everthing right in installing all that garb, I wished I had never touched it. Yah, It looked and sounded really cool but wasnt to reliable. So thanks for advice. Thank you to the others as well.

hogmaster: I went to HL and looked up the sizes of tire in the 589's that you may want. They offer 2 types of 589's. The first one is ITP 589M/S......they do not appear to have a 24" tire. The Titan 589 M/T tire however does come in the 24" tire. Their size however still won't work because of the rim size they come in.......they only appear to come in 24x8x11's...? The Rancher runs a 12" rim and a 11". So may I suggest Vampire/or Good Year Mud Runner tires. They both are fairly nice on hard pack and honestly are one of the best ALL AROUND tires I've seen. Our Rubicon has them and if not for the fact I bought Outlaws I would have Vamps on it. WHY? Personel preferences on ride issues.....Outlaws are a bit rougher. As for the Mud Runners, they are equally nice in the muck but are even better on the Hard pack. Seem to be a real good tire. Here are some of the sizes for them........GY Mudrunners...The smallest is 25",,,,,but they only weight 19lbs.....thats good. At the time my Outlaws were one fo the lightest tires and they weight around 21 to 22 a tire. So you may want to check out the Muddrunners........as for the Vamps here they are........same thing.....they make a 24" but not to fit both rims....only come in 11" for rim size. Their 25's are able to be on both however and they come in.....25"x9.50x11 and 25x9.50x12's. They weight 22lbs. So here are some other options for you. Again 25's can be run, BUT honestly you do notice them in 2nd and higher gears when 4xing. You won't notice 25's on hard pack. I am sure you can get after market tires in 24's, but 25's wont hurt anything much worse than stock.....IF you get less agressive tread.....might even try mud bugs. Hope this helps and good luck.

I just recently purchased Dirt Devil's all around for my fourtrax and they are wonderful all around tires. I don't know if they come in the size you need but I have yet to get them stuck and I have been in some pretty nasty mudholes this past weekend.
