What kind of compression numbers should a 86 250r be running? how about after a rebuild? And around what numbers should i start considering a rebuild?

depends on your elevation and mods done to the motor. a bone stock motor should run around 150-160 PSI on a fresh motor. Sometimes more, sometimes less, like I said it depends on your elevation.

 

this is a bone stock motor that hasn't been rebuilt in some time. i live in ohio..about 800-1000 ft above sea level.

They're running around 150-155 here at 4500ft......

 

I have 165 psi at sea level. Mine is also still on the original bore and piston.

 

One thing to remember is that not all compression gauges will give you the same reading.
I just use mine to get an idea on how much compression I am loosing between rebuilds.
As soon as I see compression start to drop 10-15 psi, I rering/rebuild.
