I have the chance to get an 1984 atc 250r? It's supposed to run good and be in decent condition. How much would be a good price for it? Are parts hard to find? How different is the motor from a fourtrax 250r. Thanks for any help.

I own 3 air cooled atc 250r's. I have 2 84's and 1 83. I payed 200 for the 83 not running for parts. 1200 for one 84 from original owner in fair shape and 900 for the other 84. They are very easy to work on. There are lots of parts on ebay all the time for them pretty cheap. Mine have been very reliable and are very quick machines.

i have a friend with an 82 atc 250r with the 300 kit. we've only been able to get it running for an hour. The problem is, at first, gas would just flow out of the carb overflow as if the float wasn't shutting off. It ran fine, but gas leaking out of the carb all the time wasn't good. So we tried to adjust that little flap underneath the needle, and gas stopped flowing out of there, BUT it wasn't letting any gas down either. so we adjusted it some more, and it ran for an hour, then all of a sudden died and wouldn't run anymore. can you think of other things to try? are we doing the right thing by adjusting that flap? while it ran it was damn fast..scary fast.. i'm not sure if i want to ride it anymore..

It definitely sounds like the float is sticking. To adjust the float you must take off the float bowl. Then turn the carb upside down and bend the metal pieces that adjust the float. I believe that the line in the middle of the float must be even with the side of the bowl. If that isn't the problem and it's still leaking then try a carburater rebuild kit. You probably fouled the plug the last time so it won't start. Also check to make sure the reeds are in good condition. If they are in bad condition they will allow more fuel into the motor and it will cut down on your power and make it run richer.

oh sorry to hijack your thread 300exazzkikr.

for your info, my friend got it for $600 without a throttle and leaky carb. got a throttle for $20, now we gotta work on the carb. i told him he should've just gotten a fully working one for $1000 but he wouldn't listen and now we gotta work on it

After you get it running just pull the spark plug out and check it. If it's running lean the middle part of the plug with be gray or tan. If it's running rich it will be black and have oil all over it. The ideal color is a light black/brown color. These things should run a little on the rich side to prolong engine life. He payed the right amount for it. Around here they can't be found in the paper for less than 1000 bucks. When I bought mine it was by word of mouth. They are fun machines and when modified run extremely well. They are getting rare so parts are getting hard to find but parts are out there. Also if he has the 300 kit on it, no more pistons are available from honda for them. What color is the top end? The 81&82's had red motors and the 300 kit has larger cooling fins and is greay. I have an 83 with a 300 big bore kit and honda sold me the last .100 over piston they had. I believe they still have rings left but no pistons. So make sure you take care of that top end otherwise you'll be searching for a stock cylinder.

should ve put this in the 3 wheeler part because its pretty dead there. on the carb thing take it apart as far as you feel safe. then soak it in gas overnight and then blow it clean with air. if you need to know where the factory presets are on the adjustments im sure someone will let you know. i have a couple of stock carbs for that if yours is somehow shot i get you one for shipping cost and a 12pack.
