Does the ES in the 450 forman stand for extra slow
#6
My 98 450ES runs about 50mph (couldn't tell you specifically as I run 28" mudzillas which changes the ratio)
If you want it to go faster - get an unlocker. People I've talked to say it adds about 15-20 mph to run in 2WD, plus doesn't leave you worn out at the end of the day from straining to steer.

If people you've talked to said that it adds 15-20mph just by putting it in 2wd, then people have been lying to you. There's no way it will add that much speed, if any.

AtomicAuston the Sportsman 400 has been a good quad, I bought it for myself but didn't care for the belt driven automatic, so I gave it to my wife mainly because the ride is so smooth she can ride it all day and not get tired. It has good power and is easy to ride.

My 98 450S makes about 50 mph, even at 8000 ft elevation, with 26" Dirt Devil tires. Have you considered a better air filter, checked jetting, etc.? The Highlifter people claim the unlocker 2/4wd will really wake up the 450. Any of you Foreguys tried this? How is the install, and performance as a result?

When I put ANY of my 3 4X4 trucks in 4X4, there is a noticable decrease in power, which means the engine has to work harder to drive the front wheels, causing you to reach full throttle potential quicker with less speed - are you saying the same would not apply for a quad? It sounds logical to have more top end speed by reducing the drive load to 2WD.
