How many people in here have, or are planning to sell your Honda for the new Suzuki Z400? Tired of waiting for Honda to come out with a high performance quad yet?

Not nearly as tired as I would be if I were a Suzuki fan....

I'd be really interested in the new Suzuki if they'd used the DRZ400E engine instead of the DRZ400S engine.

As it sits, I wouldn't be happy with it until I spent $1000 bringing it back up to DRZ400E levels - which I've already done to my 400EX....

Besides, if I wanted the no holds barred high performance machine I'd be looking into the Cannondale. More HP stock than the Suzuki, Raptor, 400EX, and possibly DS650.

Really - as it sits, I am looking for a 2nd quad for a practice/play machine.... I'll either be buying a new Cannondale (best performace, highest price), used 400EX (proven, inexpensive, but I've already got one), or a new Suzuki (new, probably more engine potential than a 400EX, but would be paying full retail more than likely, other unknowns).

I'm selling my mint '86 250r to get the new Suzuki. I have owned several 250r's and I'm just tired of the two stroke scene and want something new. I had a raptor for a year and it was a great quad but it just didn't have the handling of the Honda. It look's like the Suzuki has the potential to have the best of both worlds. If not I'll probably buy a Cannondale.

It will be $5699. Same as the 400ex...except with about 10hp more.

Not trying to be argumentive, but 10HP is a VERY liberal figure. Anyone expecting that is going to be sorely disappointed.

The DRZ400E puts out about 37hp with a good pipe and intake mods.

The stock 400EX puts out around 27hp, 29 to 30 or so with intake and pipe mods.

The DRZ400S (same engine as the quad) lowers the compression, uses a MUCH lower performance carb (36mm BSR constant velocity carb vs 39mm Keihin FCR), and likely has less aggressive camshafts (haven't checked the part numbers).

This will all combine with the fact that the quad has more rotating mass to turn (so it will never deliver the same numbers as the bike with the same setup). I'd expect 30 to 31, maybe 32 HP from the Suzuki. I expect power to fall smack dab in between the 400EX and the Raptor.

The 400EX will always deliver more low end due to it's much longer stroke, the Suzuki will likely always deliver more effortless RPMs. The Suzuki will have more HP potential on the top to be squeezed from it.

When comparing the Z400 and 400ex, the Z400 does seem promising.....
1-High performance engine that will probably have a good 5 horses over the mild 400ex
2-Dimensions almost exactly the same as the 400ex.....except lower seat height and less weight.
3-The Z400 has reverse.....where the 400ex does not.
4-All this at the same price

The question is......will Suzy have first year troubles?

Die hard Honda guys.....hang in there....the Z400 will take a large portion of sport quad sales. Then you will get the announcement that your new sport quad will be available in 2 years (assuming Honda will take the same route as they did with the Rincon).
