I am new to the world of ATV's. I am thinking about a 2002 Honda Recon. When i was looking at the Honda line i noticed that they have a Recon and a ReconES. Can someone please tell me the difference. Does anyone have complaints on the Recon itself? I would love to talk to some Recon Owners. I have AIM: Nautic250

Thank you

The Recon is a real peach!!! It is a great beginners bike. It is best suited for smaller adults or experienced (larger) kids. The bike has an "autoclutch". When you pull up or down on the shift lever, it engages the clutch. When you let go, it goes into gear. On the regular model you do this with your foot. On the ES model, you do this with an electric switch located on the handlebars. Also check out the new Suzuki Ozark. It is similar and has had good reviews on the magazines.

Recons are great. Sometimes it's more fun to be able to just hop on and ride the recon, then ride my 400ex

I love my Recon and I am not small {6' well over 200 lbs} nor inexperienced {44}. It has enough power to get me in trouble and user friendly enough that my 11 y.o. son handles it well. If you buy one you will not be disappointed! Great balance and quality feel. Riding it all day is a pleasure. I guess I just prefer mid sized quads as I have ridden everything from a Rubicon 500 {HUGE} to a hopped up Banshee {UnGODLY FAST} but feel the most at home on a Recon. Lest you all think I'm a Honda bigot, an Ozark is on the way soon! Lots of variety at my house! Great atv to start with, it will hold its value well if you take good care of it too. Welcome to our hobby!

Lets see...my recon mods? It's actually not as modded as my signature implies. I just thought I was before I got my 400ex.

Chassis Mods: Rear 22inch Surtracks on Stock rims, 20 inch Ohtsu Radials on .190, 18 inch Turf Tames on .190, new Oem's up front on stock rims, Front/Rear Wheel spacers, Stock 400ex bars with MSR Gel Grips, Pro-Design Kill Switch, Fender Supports for removing racks (keeps plastic sturdy so I can remove racks to reduce weight).

Engine Mods: .80 over piston, 10.5 (Aprox) compression, Port Enlargement, Ports mirror polished, 3 angle valve Job, Derestricted Stock Headpipe, K&N Filter/Outerware, removed airbox.

Appearance Mods: Poilished Thumb Throttle Assembly, Polished Brake Resevoir Cap.

I was planning on getting an e-series universal silencer, and works shock, but them I got my 400ex and began modding it and lost interest in my recon. I might add some more to it now that I have a job, but no definate plans.

The Recon is one great little machine. It is nearly "bullet-proof". Great learner's quad. I bought my g.f. one about a year ago. My only regret is that I didn't buy the ES(electric shift) model. The '01's also have more power than the older models, as they use the same engine in the 250EX. Also(I think) you get an oil cooler on the later bikes. Not positive about this point, though. These little bikes will run forever, if you keep oil in 'em, and don't overheat 'em.
EXCELLENT choice for a first quad!!!!!!!

Bobcat-I put an FMF Megamax and K&N on the Recon, and the difference was dramatic!! I highly recommend these mods.

mattsxj98sport,
My 99 Recon is fantastic. Have it stored at present but when it was put up it had approx. 350 hours on it.

I used it to get to point A to Point B very quickly with minimal fuss.

I would warm it up in the morning because its a little cold nature and then for the rest of the day it would set there in case I saw something on the other end of the property that needed checked out or to remove those pesky stray quad riders.

Jump on, Hit the E button, Put it in first, stand up with knees slightly bent and use body English going in the curves and you almost have a sport Quad.
