rubiconman,
I dont know about the mud to well, but several of my riding buddies have 400's and they are great creek bikes with a decent set of tires, ( Ohtsu's ProWedge II's are really popular here ) , dont expect to go far in the sand/water with those stockers. last year my buddy and I were at a crossing that we seriously under-guessed, when the water came over his headlights we decided to "float" our bikes across, i helped him float the 400 and the water was so deep that it came up to my neck level ( im 6' 5" ) , well of course we left the bike running so lessen the chance of it drawing water into the pipe, well it did anyways and it died, when we got it to shore and we had to do was just stand it up and let the water run out of the pipe, after that she started right up.

The 400 does fine in the mud, unless the mud hole is full of ruts. The one limiting factor with a 2WD Sport Quad is the ground clearance in back. I've taken my 400ex through alot of difficult terrain, that I would have thought only a 4x4 could handle (I'm an ex 4x4 rider myself). The thing I like most about my bike is how light it is, and how easy it is to manuever in the tight and twisty trails. If you want to get over obstacles, you just bump the throttle, and the front end lifts right over them. The stock tires seem to do a really good job on the trails.
