Just had first service done.dealer told me not to tow in d2,it is only to be used in slippary conditions,IE.ice,mud.All other modes of riding to be in d1.Any riding or towing I do 40-50k and under I always use low, above those speeds is my concern. This goes against the manual, has anybody also been told this.

If you are towing anything heavy use Low. If you use High while putting strain on the quad, you will burn up the clutch. I would use Low for anything I would ever tow.

D2 is just plain useless. There is no need to use it and i would not recomend using it.

Your Honda dealer has not done their homework. When ever you look at horse power and torque graphs of an engine, you will notice that they reach their peak at two different points. The torque usually peaks out at a lower rpm than the horsepower.

D1 is designed to keep your engine more in the peak horse power range for a "sportier" feal and a better throttle response. D2 is designed to keep the engine in the peak torque band for work and pulling. In a recent ATV magazine test, the Rubicon actually pulled a sled 15 feet farther in D2 than D1, several times.

If your are pulling alot of weight, you should use low. In low, selecting D1 or D2 is "over ridden."

Hope this helps,

I have over 1000 miles on my 01 Rubicon, I use it to haul gravel (1000lbs at a time) never have used D2, always D1 low...no problems so far. Needless to say, Im happy with the machine.

Even though you have the selector set for D1, anytime you use Low, you are using the D2 shifting pattern. Low uses the D2 pattern, regardless of what the **** is set to.

I use d2 all time. The shift pattern and points are very different than d1. I use it to follow my small son around on his quad thru the trails. It keeps the rpms much lower at a given speed and thus much quiter. try using D1 and d2 at say a constant 10 mph. You will notice the difference. But, remember to stop the quad as you change from D1 to D2 or D2 to D1. If you just move the selector while moving the transmission does not change modes. You must stop. I also agree with the previous post. Anytime, you use L you are in the D2 torgue biased shift pattern.

I agree,
my D2, will do very well when taking off the first time, but after i have started rolling, I don't dare slow down. When i go real slow after going fast, and then get into the the throttle, the motor bogs down hard, like it is not downshifting, but if i come to a complete stop, it tears up the road. I slowed down for a yeild sgn the other day, when i tried to accelerate, i almost got ran over.
Also, i now have 2800= miles on my Rubi, when i go down hills, the tranny makes a loud grinding noise, like plastic gears are being spun out or stripping, and if i have been sitting at idle while in gear, the same noise is made briefly when I pull out.
Any help?
