In the service manual it says one way to check oil is with engine running remove dipstick. I tried this but oil comes out of hole when running. It is fine when I shut it off. Do I have something wrong or do they all do this?

The manual is a little confusing. Basically you want to let the engine idle on a flat surface for 2-3 minutes. Shut the engine off. Take out the dipstick and clean it off. Put the dipstick back in WITHOUT screwing it in and remove it to see the oil level. It should be between the top two marks.

Muzzy3,

I had a problem with checking my oil on the Rubicon. In fact I was thinking that it was losing oil, and posted something to that effect. TEXMud replyed to that post, but I was WAY off base.

I understood the book to say that I was to let the motor run for 10min with an additional 5min for temps under 50F. I followed the instructions and kept showing that my oil was low. A trip to the dealer showed me to be over a quart overfilled due to my continued adding of oil.

Here's what I do now. I start the bike and let it idle till the fan comes on, shut it off and wait 5min. then check the oil as TEXMud describes. It may be overkill, but that's the only way that I am comfortable that I am getting an accurate reading.

Hope that helps.

When I park my atv after a day of riding, I turn off my gas start the engine to drain the carb. When I start it I put it in gear and just bump the throttle a little to circulate the oil in the trans, put it back in neutral and let it idle until it stalls. I rev it a few times as it begins to stall. When it stalls, I let it set a few minutes and then check the oil. I know at this point it is always ready to go next time.

Remember when you change it to drain both drain plugs.

Specta,

That's an excellent idea.
