I just got a beat to heck old Honda atv in a trade for nothing. This thing is toasted! I need some help ID'ing this thing so at least I could part it out. VIN JH3TE0606HC206779.
It is about the size of a Recon, racks f & r, plastic is gone, metal gas tank, massive pivot bar out front that goes into the spindles, 2wd, elect. start, shift pattern bottom to top is--r/n/sl/1/2/3/4 as stamped on case, headlamp on handlebars, shaft drive, hyd drums in F, mech drum on RRear. What in the world do I have here? LF spindle is broken, wheels are all bad, tank is rusty, muffler gone, rear grab bar broke off, too many other parts missing to list. Engine still turns over {kick} and lights on pod light up when key is on while kicking. Shifts smooth too. Too nasty and incomplete to fix, but if I could find another maybe make 1 out of 2. Anyone able to help me out?

I ran the number you provided and it is off on the 8th digit. Are you sure it's a 6 and not a 5???

The VIN number break down shows that it is a 1987 Honda TRX250.....only these and the '84TRX200 had the "independant swing style" front ends.

The TRX250 was made from 1985 to 1987. The only major differences between the three year models are that the 1986 and 1987 have a different rear end than the 1985 model. They are close, but do not interchange.

The engine will interchange with:
'85-'87 ATC250SX
'85-'87 ATC250ES Big Red
'85-'87 TRX250 FourTrax [what you have]
'88-'00 TRX300 FourTrax 2wd [The only difference being the stroke...otherwise they have the same engine mounts]

Thanks, KNOWSALOT, I double checked the VIN and it is just as posted. 85-87 TRX 250 sounds about right, the boys I got it from kept saying it was a 250 but I didn't put much stock in what they said. I pulled this thing from DEEP in the woods of central FL. They had to stop playing their banjoes to help me load it up in my "new fangled" 86 Ranger pickup. Y'all come back now, ya hear!
They were definately not rocket scientists. If I could get this thing to run and find some decent plastic, I might give it a try. But they said it quit running because of an "electrical problem", and I don't know what they monkeyed with to fix it. They gave me a box of parts that went with it, but they were all old Mopar ign. parts not Honda. Was there a common Honda ignition part failure in that era, and what other Honda quads had the same electronics? Another parts quad would be the best thing to try I suppose.
