How do you guys wash (clean) your chain on your 400ex? what product do you use to clean the dust, and to lube it? Another question, how do you take it out from the quad? do you have to break it?

thanks

The 400EX comes with an O-ring chain.
Do not use gas to clean it, as it will destroy the O-rings.
Kerosine along with a SOFT bristle brush works well for cleaning the chain.

Afterwards, you can let the chain soak in oil, or just use spray on oil depending on the type of terrain you are going to be riding in.

I ride in the sand, and spray the chain with WD-40 as it drys quickly, and does not attract the sand (lapping compound) like the heavier, stickier oils will.

The actual lubrication for most of the chain is already sealed under the O-rings. Thats what makes them last so long.

Remove the chain by removing the clip from the masterlink, and then the masterlink itself.

Be sure to install the clip in the correct direction when re-installing it, or it could get knocked off from the forward motion of the chain smacking a rock, piece of wood, or anything the chain may come into contact with.

The best product that I have seen on the market for chain maintenance is the Bel-Ray chain lube containing "SuperClean". It cleans and lubes your chain at the same time. It's o-ring safe and we have used it for the last two years with no problems. It's also the same chain lube we provide to the racers.

It really works. When you spray it on, it breaks the dirt down and simply "melts" it and drains to the floor. Much better than the other brands that claim to clean and lube in one spray. Hardly ever will you have to bring out the toothbrush. Just be sure to use it as all other lubes and spray it on AFTER you ride while the chain is still warm.

If you decide to try it out, be sure to get the one with "SuperClean". It will have the logo on the label. The can looks very similar to their regular chain lube, so be sure to look at it carefully.

Knowsalot, is that SuperClean the same as the Castrol SuperClean product???

If so, a warning should go out about SuperClean; don't it let sit on paint or aluminum as it will eat away at them. I've had a few "boo-boos" in the past with that stuff. It does clean though!

Stock 400ex chains don't have masterlinks. You'll have to break the chain and buy a masterlink to remove it for cleaning.
