250r differences......???

heres the REAL diffrience....if you race a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke brand new...well YEA..the 2 stroke will win...BUT...if you run both of them into the ground...for 15 years...that 4 stroke still has the same power..and will be out running that 2 stroke...I know 2 strokes....we raced the 1988 250R quad...had to rebuild that motor almost every other race....but my 4 stroke 3 wheeler?...I only had to replace some gaskets....no rebuild...so...if your looking for a low maintaiince machine..and you dont need to keep in the power band while hiking up trails...go with the 4 stroke..I;m able to do a hill climb in 4th gear..but my friends ALWAYS gotta down shift there 2 strokes...o well...they'l learn some day...the only thing I do like on the 2 strokes is the noise they make....and they are qucker then the 4 strokes...but...if they were low maintance machines...whare all you do is dump the gas and go...then I would buy one...

A n'88 is not necessarily the best year to buy. If you want more stability than the 86 and 87 is the R you want because of the longer swingarm. Also, I'm not sure about the the 87 but I know that you can bore the 86 motor over 4 or 5 more times than the 88-89. I'm not exactly why this is but a guy I know with an '88 told me this- I think he said something about the 86-87 R's had a taller stroke while the 88-89 R's had a larger bore... that would explain why they can't be bored over as much. Honestly, I have ridden all four model years of the R and it's difficult to notice a difference. Basically, just buy the bike that already has the most performance parts on it.

JM2C the plastic to replace is outragus on the 250r (for orginal) 400EX is dirt cheep. I had a 88250R and loved it I put a 89 CR250 head gasket in it to boost compresion. I went to the 400ex after I sold the Rand was disapointed in the power compared to the R. but I learned to like it w/ a few mods. parts are everywere for both. resale might be better on thr R after mods cuz there no more made. If you dig 2 stroke power Id get the R. also they made a clutch push rod update kit for older Rs.

There is a difference in foot pegs. '86 and '87s are bolted on, '88/9's have the foot peg stub I guess you'd call it factory welded to the frame, mabye not even welded, just part of the frame, then the peg mounts to it via the pin with spring around it is my guess, but my pegs are welded. I found out my R is a '89 with a '87 motor.
drummerguy: Now I got the best of both worlds, a '89 R and 3 350x's.

All 250Rs have a 246cc displacement in stock trim. All have same bore/stroke and about the same horsepower (36-38 at the flywheel).
Engine changes; the 86 is different from the rest in that it's connecting rod is 5mm shorter than other years and the wrist pin is located 5mm lower in the piston. You can't use an 86 style piston in other "stock" R engines without using a cylinder spacer.
The 86-87 have steel swingarms and are gold; the 88-89 have aluminum and silver and are 1" shorter than 86-87.
The 86-87 have camber adjustment on the a-arms; the 88-89 don't and are configured to be 1" forward of 86-87.
Of course, the headlight was moved in 88, 88 was the year of the polished wheels, 89 had the clutch actuator upgraded.
As far as jumping, the R is supreme.
If you can get an 86 for under 3Gs and it's all there and straight (like no bent a-arms or axles, all the gears work, decent tires, all the plastic in reasonable condition, no major frame cracks[stand it up on the grab bar and check the bottom of the frame carefully, use a flashlight if you need to]) that seems like a good deal.
Personally, buy any year of R, they're all great!

It is hard to say stock but I have had mine clocked at 87 mph. But that was with an FMF low range pipe which I now switched to a CT mid range pipe. I also have many engine modifications which contribute to this speed. The 250R is more of an acceleration bike than top speed...that is why so many people race them. Personally, I don't see the need to make the top speed of your quad as high as mine is. The only time I got it up to 87 is when I radared it last year. I have yet been on a trail that was long and smooth enough to hit 87!
