250r motor in 400ex
#3
Hello All,
Not true at all. My buddie just did the 250R motor swap into his 2001 400EX and it was NOT a bolt up deal as you may have heard. It took a lot of custom welding. He had to make a lot of his own brackets for the various parts: Especially his pipe for it. Before you think he did not know what he was doing, he has been in quads for years and his Uncle helped him do it and he owns 4 250Rs that have been restored twice!!
Good luck!!!

I don't think it's worth the trouble. When everythings is said and done you basically just have a 250r, what's the point. The round tubing on the ex frame is stronger but the 250r had better bracing. I would just buy a brand new oem 250r frame for $850 and work with that.

Not a bad idea. Probably didn't cost $850 for the custom welds etc. but the problem is now you have custom welds vs. computer aided welds that could break. I don't know about you, but it just seems like everytime you homegrow a project like a 250R from a 400EX you just are constantly changing or fixing stuff. My buddy had a hard time getting the rubber for the air filter and a getting it to stay on etc. Don't get me wrong, his bike runs good and works, but it was not the "Bolt On" project it was intended to be...Would he do it again? Who knows...
As far as the pictures, I am not sure if I can get these or not. Maybe someday...
