When timing the 400ex...

Do the index lines on the cam shaft and crankcase have to line up after the chain is tightened or just when the cam is put in before tightening the chain?

When you tighten it the cam will be a little off because of the tension. Make sure the crankcase and the cam are lined up then put the chain on then tighten it.

The timing marks should be lined up AFTER you install the chain tensioner. If learned this the hard way......wound up having the back the cam up a tooth so the marks would line up once the chain is tightened.
