OK, well I'm looking into building a project bike, either using a CRF450 motor, or trying to find a beat up 250R and restoring it completely, which do you think would be the best bet and also if anyone on here as created the CRF, please email me or PM me all the little nic nacs you needed to make it work and the tpe of frame and also where you got the CRF motor. hey i have a 86 trx250r that needs new plastic but otherwise in great shape. i just put new 18x11x9 holeshot mx's on it and am getting a new used fmf gold series fatty pipe this week to put on. i will include the fmf pipe on it now. it has loads of aftermarket [parts on it. 3 rides ago i just put 300 dollars into it. please email me at kremek@cablespeed.com i am asking 3700.00 but i am negotible. i have some pics but they make the bike look bad and the bike is dirty cause they are after a ride. i will try to get new ones if u are serious.

 

What are you going to build it for and how much do you want to spend. If you want to use the CRF motor you are going to be hard_pressed to get out of it for less than $15k. I am currently, in the middle of a 450 with a Houser frame which is the easiest way I could think of doing it, but probably not the cheapest. I got the motor out of the dirtbike and had a local dealer buy it from me to do suspension testing.

 

Wow, I didn't realize a CRF would cost that much. Question, if I was to get a stock, R frame, would the CRF motor still fit in it, because I can get a stock frame and setup easily and can pick up a motor by itself also. Mike, thanks, but I have decided after some reaseacrh, I am going to attempt the CRF. I will let everyone around here know about your quad and good luck selling it. If I may ask, why are you selling it. Also, the quad will be for MX.

 

The 250R motor has a HUGE potential for increses in horsepower, and responds well to many modifications. There are many aftermarket goodies for this machine as well.

I can't really say much about the 4-stroker due to my lack of exposure to it... But 'typically' it takes twice the displacement of a 4-stroker to compete with the 2-strokes.
Example: YZF425 races and competes well with the 250 class, the YZF250 competes well with the 125 class....

There are many many aftermarket companies building big bore and stroker kits for the honda.
I think a raspy built 330cc R would be beat the daylights out of a thumper... but then again, depends on what your using it for...
Stock raptors aren't much of a challenge for my itty bitty 250.

 

I realize the displacement differences, but for my type of riding, I need the less maitenance and also, R's are eventually going to becoem outdated, but they do earn my respect for remianing competitive despite being 12 years old. They also require alot more maitenance than I am looking for, atleast right now. Also can the CRF motor be made to fit in an EX frame, because it would be great, because of the much lower price.

 

I was told that there is a CRF in an EX frame, but I have never seen it because the guy only races short track at Elizabeth City, NC. It is supposed to look ok, the biggest problem is getting it all to fit with the swingarm and pivot. The EX would be the better choice since the top frame rails are higher to allow for the taller 4 stroke motor.

Lonestar sells a frame and motor mounts for the YZ426 or the CRF450 motors.
