Um from stock to race ready....$500 for a crappy X up to like $25,000 for a "race ready" R.... Theres a huge difference between X's and R's one is good for trail riding and playin and the other is a racer jumper..not to play ride on....

If you are going to be doing alot of trail riding you would rather have the 250x. But if you are going to be racing you want the 250r. I have a 250r and all I ever do is fill up the gas tank. The 250x are usually around $1800 and the 250r is usually around $2000 - $6000.

Yeah, the R burns a bit of gas. True. I've run out several times.
Then I got the IMS 3.6 gallon tank. Don't run out anymore. I actually think it gets better mileage than my 454.
The X is a great trail machine. I ride my R on trails though, high deserts of California, jeep trails, dunes.
If reverse is important to you, get the X. The X is a 5 speed, the R is a 6 speed. The X is a 4 stroke, the R is a 2 stroke. You will need to replace the piston on the R almost every year depending on how much you ride.
The R has twice as much horsepower and it's about 30 lbs lighter.
You can get an X for as little as $1500 in very good condition. An R in good condition will be at least $2500 for an 86-87 that needs plastic and tires. An 88 will go for over $4000 in "OK" condition. An 89, sky's the limit.
