keep it. choke has nothin' to do with power unless it's not working properly.

You can send it to a shop and have the choke removed it will allow for better air flow though the carb, they can also taper bore them and you'll have a carb that great for a 400 to 416 for alittle over $150.

thrshr doesn't know what he is talking about and no you don't need to send it to a shop. I did it to my 400ex and I liked it. I wouldn't do it to yours because where you live. I never have a problem starting, but I live in sunny San Diego. The choke is different on the 400 compared to other carbs,it blocksthe throat of the carb from letting air in. Even when the choke is not on it is in the way of letting in the maximum amount of air into your engine. So people remove the restriction for increased air flow. It helps, but I don't know how much. Downfall is not having a choke and you need a choke where you live.

darius, his bike is all stock, removing the choke is not going to make a difference worth the hassle of him not being able to start it when it's cold. that may work for worked over motors but not stock ones.

i have to say your wrong again thrshr. when you remove your choke you get better throttle response. i'm not doing it to mine tho either cuz i like to ride in the winter. maybe if this was a full race quad and i had another to mess around on i would do it tho.

For what you gain it is a complete wast of time. You need it anyways.

so, juggalo, you think it's worth the hassle of not being able to start his bike? great, it gives it a better throttle response, but what's the use of having a good throttle response if you can't get it started?

Removing the choke is a great cheap mod as it restricts airflow in any situation stock or modified motors.

I live in MA where it gets damn cold in the winter and have had ZERO problems since this mod. You definitely need to up your pilot jet to a minimum for a 42 to account to the increased airflow. The 400ex are noted to be quite lean on the pilot jet and are generally tough starting in the cold. I am running a 42 pilot with no choke and it starts and idles fine, even in the dead of winter.

thrshr i dunno about your 400ex but every1 i've ever seen doesn't need the choke to start in the summer. if you reread my post you'll note how i said i wou;dn't do it to mine cuz i like to ride in the winter, obviousley he does too and he would see its not a good idea to do unless your just racing or live in a warm place all the time.
