Dwindling Riding Areas, what can we do?

I agree with upnort. A few "renegades" almost ruined it for us in NY State. They ignored the signs, knocked over the fence posts and went where they were asked not to go. The next week, the owner closed off the property. Land owners for the most part will almost always allow part of there property for hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and 4 wheelin provided you follow a few simple rules. After that section of our trail was closed off because of the inconsiderate acts of some idiots, a couple of us went back one weekend and repaired the fence, not just the part the idiots broke, but all that needed it. We have always helped the land owners, wether it be with their animals or mowing their lawn, helpin out with whatever they needed. If we go by and see litter, we pick it up even knowing it is not from us because its the right thing to do. We have been allowed back because of that. The owner knew it wasn't the regulars, all he asked was if we found who it was, to let them know if it keeps happening, he will close it for good. Well, we found them "passing through" one afternoon, tearin up the fields, they didn't know that 9 of us were takin a break in the lower field. Needless to say, they wont be comeing through any more. If everyone remembers to treat property with the respect it deserves, and to "tread lightly" when asked, we will all have places to ride for many years.
