Saint Paul Pioneer Press ..Sunday,March19,2000
In the OUTDOORS section the editor..Chris Niskanen has been running an article called " Sounding off on ATVS ".He discusses the DNR 's attempt last year to PROHIBIT off-trail usage of ATVS in STATE FOREST(it failed)and a NEW proposal to RESTRICT off-trail usage of ATVS on 7 state forest.(they will never give up!!)HE askes readers to offer THEIR views on ATVS on PUPLIC lands. And they did!! The 75 letters and e-mails ran 4-1 against ATVS on PUPLIC LANDS....PLEASE note: NOT for trail rights or LIMITED use.. but against ATVS on PUPLIC Lands.(period)
He has several readers , grouse hunters , 65 yr. old grandmas, bowhunters, law enforcement, hikers and other CONCERND people write their gripes, hech he even had a FISHERIES professor emeritus from the Univerity of Minn. who wrote that ATVS should be kept AWAY from sensitive areas such as streams and rivers, wetlands, wildlife areas etc.
HE DID include 3 readers for ATVS including a reader who wrote for " The All -Terrain Vehicle Association of Minn." Not much balance for 2 weeks of articles Blasting ATVS in Minn.
THE UPDATE :
DNR Of MINN. officals have abandoned (they claim) their attemps to PROHIBIT MOST off-trail usage after such a law was REJECTED by MINN. law makers last year.A rule PROHIBITING off-trail travel on 7 heavily used(POPULAR) "LIMITED" state forest is still ALIVE!! THE STATE FOREST INCUDE:the CHENGWATANA,D.A.R,GENERAL c.c.,ANDREWS,NEMADJI,RUM RIVER,ST.CROIX and SNAKE RIVER .
PLEASE CONTACT CHRIS NISKAGEN at cniskanen@pioneer press.com and TELL HIM some POSITIVE ATV information
PLEASE GET in touch with MINN. law makers
Your VOICE does COUNT!!!

If you will recall, Mr. Niskanen did every thing he could to demonize ATVs when the Minnesota DNR was contemplating the rule changes regarding ATVs and Grouse Hunting.
Mr. Niskanen envisions himself as the consummate upland bird hunter, complete with a kennel bred dog and a double barreled upland bird gun. Hence his despise of motorized transportation.
In fact, the first letter to the editor which he printed in the newspaper, reminds me of an article which he wrote over a year ago. I believe that the letter is fiction.
In the last 3 years, I have travelled the Minneosta trail system, both on snowmobiles and ATVs. During that time I have seen 1 cross country skier and one dog musher, period.
Where are all of the "people" who enjoy the solitude of the woods. In their living rooms with their coffee table audubon books, that's where. They dream of venturing into the National and State forests someday, but rarely get there. Those in opposition to trail usage do not frequent the out of doors. If they did we would see them.
What invokes the ire of these armchair outdoor adventurists is staying at the resort and sitting on the front porch listening to some CLOWN/MORON 2 miles away with "pipes" on his ATV, Dirt bike or snowmobile. I am probably the number one proponent of individual rights but the "thumpers and sceamers" are killing us.
"Pipes" are the number one complaint in the State of Wisconsin, and Minnesota is not far behind. Do us all a favor and leave your vehicles stock exhaust system in place.
If they can't hear us, they do not know that we are out there.

I sent my opinions.
Some people do make a good point. Pipe's do increase the sound level of our machines. But many people, like myself. Only own one machine. And I use it on the track, and on the trail. And switching pipes, messing with the jetting, etc, etc, is just too much work to do all of the time. So I ride with my race pipe on the trail.(probaly not a good idea) I do however, take it easy around roads, buildings and other structures too keep my exhaust volume down too a reasonable level.
The other biggest reason the "tree hugger's" are having a fit is because of litter. And I have to agree with that. I see a lot of careless riders out there throughing thier cans and wrappers in the woods, instead of disposing them properly. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!!!
