The XR400 is quite a bit lighter, and has roughly the same amount of power, and also has a higher top speed. It would easily beat the 400ex in a straight-line drag race, and probly in most any riding conditions period.

i heard that the engine from the xr400 was where honda got the engine for the 400ex.they are not ecxatly the same, they are pretty close to it. the xr is definately faster and will kill in the drag races. but the ex won the high performance shoot out in in a recent 4 wheel atv action.

Hey, I have a 2000 400EX and my main riding buddy has an 2000 XR400, we bought them about 3 weeks apart.

When we race I can usually holeshot him, and we will pull even somewhere into 4th on my EX. Then it's all over, he runs away.

The XR is geared a lot higher than the EX, it's 1st gear is about the same as my 2nd, guess that's why I usually holeshot him.

BTW the XR has approx 32hp and the EX has approx 27hp both at the rear tires, from what I have seen.....

the only place a 400ex will win is in mud and maybe sand.

Was Wondering when someone was going to point out the Horsepower difference. It seems that Honda detuned the Motor for the EX due to the extra stress of the quad weight and frame.

Yep, Honda used a different cam, .5mm smaller carb, and lower compression, I believe.

I believe some of the difference is due to power loss thru the axle, 2 tires, etc... for the EX too, as those figures were RWHP.
