I got a new old atc 250R that has an 6 inch extended swing arm and minor jet to the carb. This one is the air cooled model. The engine has been rebuilt. Also note this model only has a 5 speed not 6 speed. My question is.. can you jump one of these? (especially since it has an extended swing arm)? can you get big air safely on a three wheeler to begin with?

ALSO: I have a "date" tommorow with my friend who has an completely stock 01 raptor to drag race him. How much is he going to smoke me? the race will be on dirt and on pavement, note the rider on the raptor is a very poor shifter and racer. When i raced a banshee on dirt across a plain i could hang with him till high gears then he blew my doors off. What other quads can i expect to be able to beat with my tricycle?

thanks

We used to jump 3 wheelers all the time. 3 wheelers were so much fun since they were always nice and lite. They were always fun doing wheelies too.

three-wheelers are at their best when you have at least two wheels on the ground. Jumping tykes is pretty hairy to say the least, as for big air, definitly out of the question.

Now on the ground an 85-86 atc250r will eat a raptor in a drag, the 83-84 air-cooled 250r will put up a good fight and the 81-82 air-cooled models don't stand a chance.

I raced the bike you have and you will get smoked very bad by the raptor. If you are not a very good rider do not jump it. 3 wheeler were unstable yes they were more fun then a barrel of monkies also but if you jump it you need a smooth take of area and a smooth landing area a rear wheel landing is best with the front just off the ground if you land front first there is an 80% chance that you will kiss the ground if you are a good rider a so so rider will eat it for sure.
Have fun but be carfull.

I had an 86 a couple of years ago as a toy. It had a 310 kit and a bunch of other goodies on it when I bought it. Geez talk about getting arm pump. Main problem was keeping the frontend down. It laid the neighbors new CR250 to waste out on the highway with ease. I sold it to a guy that is going to make a sand drag machine out of it. He claims he is going to use a FL400 cylinder and make it have over 400cc's. I haven't seen him since. LOL He might have succeeded.

MY 250R is the 83-84 year air cooled model that has more horses then the older generation. I think i can keep up with a bone stock 01 raptor; what do you think? The funnest thing i have done since i got it was smoke my friends 300ex down the city street (should have seen the look on the pedestrians faces)i know i can roost a blaster warrior already and other 4 stroke models. I dont know what the guy did to my 250R who had it before me but this thing freakin flys, the top end never stops pulling!

thanks

Back in the early days of atv desert racing, when the 83-84 250Rs were new, it was common to read in mags and on TV coverage of the race (baja 1000) that the ATCs where traveling at close to 90 mph in the staightaways, on dirt.

They are lighter and very fast I realy did not want to swap to a quad then after I did it was a few years b/f I got onto an three wheeler again and I busted my ***, It take a lot more body english.
If your bike is running good do not touch it, if you open the air box it will go lean and a 2 stroke pipe is 90% of it's tuning it will not run w/o a pipe or a stare pipe.
Practice your launch the front will want to come up hard, if you can get a good launch you stand a chance of staying close but if not you are toast if he can ride.

thank you for your advice, I am good at open throdel starts hence the 6" swing arm. ITs fun to peel out on pavement because of it.
