We ordered a snowmachine from Lynnwood Yamaha in Washington state back in '89. Even with shipping it was les expensive then buying in state. However it did suck to get warranty work done to it since all the local dealers put you at the bottom of their list.

I suppose it depends where in Alaska you are near, although most people that I know buy their machines out of the many dealers in Anchorage. I have heard good things about Hartley Motors, but I have had many bad experiences with Honda of Anchorage.

I live in Texas and have purchased two Hondas in Alaska to have at my cabin there. I purchased a '01 Rubicon from Ron's Honda in Soldotna and a '02 Rancher next year from Hartley Motors in Palmer. Ron's Honda in Soldotna gave me good service and alot of follow up, but I paid full list for the ATV. This last summer I bought the '02 Rancher from Hartley Motor's in Palmer and got a good price, but not very good service. I never could get any response out of Honda of Anchorage, so they didn't get my business. One big plus to remember when buying in Alask. There is no sales tax.

Another thought, depending on whether or not you are close to the border, you could always drive to Whitehorse and get a machine there. With the exchange rate you will get really good deal. I know for a fact that they have both a Yamaha dealer and Suzuki, but I don't know about Honda.
As far as saying which dealer is better in state I wouldn't give a recommendation. I have been treated well in both Anchorage and Eagle River but then my friends have gone in after me and were treated poorly. Same goes for Hartley. My friends all get great deals and service but I experienced poor service and no help when I complained about it.
Go with who treats you the best, not necessary the guy who has the lowest price on the machine. I know that sucks but once you buy from a dealer you like, chances are they will start giving you discounts on parts and accessories if you shop there frequently.
