Default Rancher Battery Trouble

Hi folks...my quad is 8 months old....about 400 kilometers....first when i start her up before a ride she turns over real slow...barely enough to start...after running for a few minutes, turn her off and there's lots of juice in the battery...if she's left sitting for a couple of days, the clock and trip meter are reset when i turn the key on...could the battery be bad after just 8 months?

By the symptoms you describe sounds like the battery is gone. Batteries can go at any time if they are deffective. Mines 4 years old and running strong, sounds like you have a bad one.

I had to get a new battery last summer for my 98 TRX300 4x4 and the old battery was 4.5 years old.

Knowsalot said they can last from 6 months to 8 years.

It looks like according to the instructions that a slow charge is the best way to go after the electrolyte is installed in the new battery. So depending on its beginning could affect how long it lasts.

GreatCanadian,

Oh yes, I still have it. I know for sure without going outside to look at the logbook it has north of 375 hours.

Right now we use it to pull a 50 inch single blade bushhog type mower. We mow about 15 acres with it. It more comfortable than being on a tractor because it has suspension. You can mow all day and still have gas left in the tank.

Its going to be with us for a long time unless something happens we have no control over.

Good point there on the gas.....burns very little.....and it ALWAYS started the first try....choke her if it was cold and press the button just for a second and she'd always fire up right away....i dunno why but i don't have the confidence in my rancher that i did in the 300....i went riding by myself many many times and never worried about breaking down on the old 300.....it just FELT so bulletproof...i don't get that feeling on my 350.

Hey Great Canadian what year is your 350 because my cousins 2001 had the same problem. Less than 800 km on it and had to boost the battery to get it to start.

You didn't mention if your model was an ES or not, but if it is, they require more maintainance than the standard models. The meter assembly puts enough draw on the battery that if not ran regularly, it will drain the battery.

The standard model also has this draw, but not as much as the ES.

I recommend all Honda owners who have quads with the electronic display to buy a Battery Tender and keep it connected at all times. The good ones run about $60 and is worth every penny.

KNOWSALOT,

Good idea.

I don't have one of those but I do have a trickle charger and I rotate weekly between the batteries and that seems to work.
