biglease,
My neighbor has a two drive, shift model and it has held up quite well.
He uses it for everything and anything. This time of year he uses to get to his deer stand in the deep woods.
If I was to purchase a Rancher I would purchase the shift model over the ES.

We really love our Ranchers. For me, they are the perfect IN BETWEEN BIKE: Not the most powerful or fast bike out there, but enough power and size to get the job done. Not as small and agile as the 250's, but not a huge heavy tank either!!!

The Rancher ES is one of the best bikes that I have owned. I love the LCD display feature, and the ES works flawlessly. Like YZGUY said, it is the perfect in between bike. If I were you though, I would consider the Suzuki Eiger 400 shift or a Yamaha Wolverine. The Eiger is a bigger quad, has more powerful engine, and a better suspension. The wolverine is sporty, lightweight, well suspended, much faster than the Rancher and is FUN to drive! It is more for playing than for working though. Anyway, if I were you I would test drive the Wolvy, Eiger, and the Rancher and compare the three side by side to see which of them better suits your needs. Good Luck!

The December issue of ATV Rider Magazine compares 6 different 400 class quads: the Rancher, Eiger, Artic Cat 400 i, Prarie 360, Kodiak and the Sportsman. It seems to give a fair evaluation based on ease of use, power, utiltiy and comfort.
The Sportsman came out on top mostly due to ride quality and all around performance. The Kodiak and Eiger wwere a close 2nd and 3rd. The Rancher, Prairie and Artic Cat were far behind in the ranking.
