Damn, my wife went all out: White Bros exaust, 440 kit, K&N jet kit, K&N Filter and new rims and paddles. Now, I'm no mechanic (I did install the filter and exaust and it is LOUD! and quicker), but is the 440 kit worth it?
I can't install it. How much should I expect to pay for install?? What's involved? I think she paid like $260.00 for it and I'm thinking of sending it back...I don't know.
So I've done the pipe and filter, kept the air box lid on and haven't rejetted yet. Big difference. Not so sure about top end, but 2nd and 3rd pull ALOT harder. And LOUDER. Anyway, thanks. Drew.
Also what's the deal with the rings on the exaust?? If I remove some is it going to be any quieter?

Thats how they tune the exhaust.. The louder the more power, the quieter it takes away the power and gives you more bottom end. You should experiment with it for the best compromise. Dirt Wheels loved that 440 kit. I would consider installing it...D.W. said the 440 feels faster than the R with a huge torque difference. They raced a stock EX to the 440 and it pulled away by a wide margin. Ask a dealer for some prices for installation and see if its worth it to you. You could also ask them what YOU could do to take some of the labor out of the job...Does the motor need to come off for the job? Anything that you could do will cut down on the labor they will charge you. I would call the dealer with some questions.

Out of curiosity. What is included with the 440 kit? If you install the whole 440 kit, then is it neccessary to hop up to the whole exhaust system rather than the slip on?

did you get the ims 440? so you got a sleeve, a 10:1 or 11:1 piston?
if you got the 11:1 you should run higher octane , 10:1 you only need regular pump gas.
you are gonna have to get your jugg honed out so that new 440 sleeve will go down into your jugg, because it is bigger.if i were you i would go the rest of the way, like a web cam, porting polished head, rev kit,all of those things i just listed will run you about ( with out labor ) 500.00 , remember with these extras it will push 40 couple hp's, ACCORDING TO CTRACING , go to there web site and you can see what they did to there 400ex, it is www.ctracing.com , read there page on the 440, it will tell you about everything you would want to know.

Yeah, it's the IMS. Not sure about the 10:1 etc. As far as beating a 250R, I can take my friends before the mods up til 4th gear and then he pulls away. I'm thinking I can beat him good now. I really don't want to put that kind of cash into it though. Wanting to save for a CBR F4 (if wife lets me . Also the dealer hear has a '99 F4 for $7100. Should I jump on that deal (I think MSRP is like 7900) or do any of you guys know what's on tap for the 2000 models?? Sorry if that's of subject. Thanks again!!

I talked to a local cycle shop that deals with only honda atv and motorcycles. He said that the best way tp modify the 400 ex is to remove the top end and replace it with the 650R dirtbike top end. He said it is basically the same engine only downgraded for the atv. He said that then, you would have much more power without all the extra boring etc. I didnt ask a price, but I could find out for you. Let me know if you want me to get a price quote or more details from him. If you e-mail me, email me at hotshot120@hotmail.com thats the one I check more often. I seldom use the one in my profile.

Thanks for the replies. I just packed up the 440 kit and I'm going to send it back. The mechanic said it would cost around $300.00 for everything. I'm more than impressed with the new pipe & filter anyway. Pretty good gift though, huh?

I talked to josh at white bros today and he talked me out of ordering a cam and 10:1 piston and in to a 440 kit. He told me the 440 kit with my pro-meg slip on (that i already have) will make a lot more power than the cam. I called a shop in my area and they will bore my cyl. and install the sleeve for around $150. I can do all the tearing down and rebuilding myself. I can always get the cam later.
I already have a K&N with outerwear and dynojet kit and the Pro-Meg silencer.

Yeah she's great Am I OK w/out rejetting?? I run at around 6000 ft. elevation. The lowest I go when I hit the dunes is around 3000. I also figured that if I ever need the 440 kit I can get it anytime....
