Default bad hubs?

My son's 87 250x has a lot play at the rear hubs. Are the hubs bad or the axle or are there bearings that can be replaced?

DJMAC, there are no bearings in there, I'd be willing to bet your hubs need replaced. The hubs slide on the axle splines. After years of abuse and rust they loosen up. Take the cotter pin out and remove the large center hub nut and slide them off. You can inspect your axle shape at that time. WD40 it to clean out the splines and see if the axle is damaged. If it's ok, just get some new hubs, and you'll be good to go. I had a '91 250X and my bro in law still has a 1987. Scarlet and gray!! What's a guy from Michigan doing with a Buckeye quad? HA! Just kiddin ya.

If the axle hub splines are trashed might as well do some spot welds to keep the wheels from wiggling untill you break the axle.
